What is the Downing Centre?

The Downing Center is a court complex on Elizabeth Street in Sydney which houses the Downing Center Local Court and a number of other courts and tribunals. It is located in a very pretty part of Sydney near Oxford Street, Hyde Park and a number of 5 star hotels like the Hyatt on the Park. However, it is usually not for a holiday that people are visiting this complex. It is where the majority of criminal law cases are heard in the CBD of Sydney along with the Central Local Court Complex which is on the same street in Sydney and also hears matters like this. It is where the court administration occurs and there is also a large number of lawyers offices around the complex as well as the offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the District Court of New South Wales is housed on the same block but in the John Madison Tower along with the Dust Diseases Tribunal. Many simple local court claims are heard in the Downing Center Local Court for matters where a liquidated claim is worth less than $70,000.00. Also, criminal law matters which can be heard summarily or where the prosecutor has elected to have a matter heard summarily are heard in local court at the Downing Center.
