Where is the Family Court in Sydney?

There are two court complexes in Sydney which house a family court. The first is in Parramatta. This court complex houses one of the Sydney seats of the Family Court of Australia vested with jurisdiction under the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth). There is also another court for the Family Court of Australia based in Goulburn Street in the CBD of Sydney. Both of these courts hear matters related to family law which can include any aspect of the law of divorce, property settlement in divorce, child custody and parenting orders and in some case child protection matters where there is an element of conflict within a family related to family violence.

The family law courts system is drastically overloaded and there is a distinct lack of resources to attend to all of the matters which appear before the family law courts. There are a very large number of people who are self-represented which also tends to clog the system with delays and occupy court official’s time with trivial or unecessary inquiries. It also means that may litigants in the family courts risk having negative findings made against them because they are not properly informed about what the law is or how it works.
